Experience thermal water in Bath

The Thermae Bath Spa in Bath, England, is one of the city's most remarkable attractions, combining the rich history of the thermal springs with modern wellness. Bath, known for its natural hot springs since Roman times, is the only place in the UK where geothermally heated water naturally emerges to the surface. The Thermae Bath Spa harnesses this unique resource, offering visitors the opportunity to bathe in mineral-rich thermal waters - a tradition dating back to the Celts and Romans, but in a contemporary setting.

Historical significance of thermal springs

The history of the thermal springs in Bath runs deep. The Celts revered the springs as sacred and dedicated them to the Goddess Sulis, while the Romans developed the city as Aquae Sulis and constructed magnificent bathhouses, the remains of which can still be seen today. After the Romans left, the baths fell into disrepair, but in the 18th century Bath experienced a revival as a spa town, as Georgian society rediscovered the healing properties of the water. The Thermae Bath Spa continues this tradition and was designed as a modern spa that combines the historical character of the city with contemporary comfort.

Modern wellness in historical context

The heart of the Thermae Bath Spa is the thermal water, sourced from three natural springs and maintaining a constant temperature of around 33 to 35 degrees Celsius. This water is rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and sulphate, valued for their therapeutic effects for centuries. Visitors can bathe in various areas, including a large open rooftop pool with views of Bath's skyline, including the iconic Bath Abbey and surrounding hills. This pool is particularly popular as it provides a sense of connection to nature and the city's history while relaxing in the warm water.

Relaxation at Thermae Bath Spa

In addition to the rooftop pool, there are indoor pools, including the so-called Minerva Bath, named after the Roman goddess equated with Sulis. This pool is larger and features flow jets and bubbly areas that have a massage-like effect. Another highlight is the steam rooms, enriched with aromas like eucalyptus or lavender, offering an additional level of relaxation. These rooms are arranged in a circular design reminiscent of Roman architecture and feature a central shower that connects the different areas.

Bathing experience in mineral-rich water

The architecture of the Thermae Bath Spa is a successful blend of old and new. While part of the complex is housed in a historic Georgian building, a modern extension with glass and stone has been added, optimizing natural light and creating an open, inviting atmosphere. This combination reflects Bath's identity: a city proud of its past but also looking towards the present. The contrast between the old stone walls and minimalist modernity makes the place visually impressive.

The Thermae Bath Spa is not just a place of relaxation but also a cultural experience. It allows visitors to enjoy a practice that has been part of the region's history for millennia, but without the museum-like character of the nearby Roman baths. While the Roman baths are a historical monument where bathing is not allowed, the Thermae Bath Spa offers the rare opportunity to actually experience the thermal water. Many visitors appreciate this connection to the past, which is made more accessible by the modern facilities.

The facility attracts a mix of tourists and locals seeking tranquility or wanting to experience the healing properties of the water. There are areas for quiet relaxation as well as more social zones, making the spa versatile. The atmosphere is consistently relaxed, and the natural warmth of the water ensures a pleasant experience even on cooler days.

Unfortunately no photos as phones are not allowed to take in but I need to tell, this place is amazing! Especially night time in the dark. The view is exceptional from the rooftop pool. It's not cheap, but worth every penny I would say. 🙂

Un peu cher pour l'expérience. Très relaxant après une journée de marche en ville. Agréable, mais pas très silencieux.

I took a friend here on Wednesday evening, and we enjoyed the pools especially the roof top one which was very busy mid week . We didn't know there were steam, sauna and ice room as this wasn't explained or pointed out. Before our 6 to 8pm appt we went in and asked about the food in the cafe we were shown the menu which seemed very limited and expected to see some healthy options, so we went to a local restaurant, so missed opportunity for Thermae . The changing rooms was a maze and lots of towels and robes left on the floor as we entered ,lots of puddles on the floor which could be slip hazard . We were told to leave by 8.15 so had to get out of pool at 7.45 although we had long enough . There were an older couple in the lazy river area ,getting off on the water jets making erotic faces at each other and a lot of intimacy between couples . Overall enjoyable ,but apart from uniqueness of the roof pool ,I didn't feel it was luxury . I wasn't offered any packages when I booked on the phone ,just what I asked about the roof pool and for only a little more I could have had food ,drink and treatment .

The Spa session was great, but the sharing platter (part of the Twighlight package) was pretty poor. The sharing platter was 2 bowls of mediocre soup, followed by cheese, crackers + a selection of cured meats and pickles. It was very basic, and felt like it was done on a tight budget. We asked for more crackers, as there was loads of cheese but not a lot to go with it. The staff were friendly and happy to supply more crackers, but the cafe was really bright, basic and not really in keeping with the general ambience of the Thermae Spa.

The roof top pool is magnificent but usually very crowded. The whole spa experience is pleasant from start to finish.

A must do experience if you visit bath. Loved the outdoor pool and the saunas. Gets very busy here that's the only thing to point out! But fab experience.

Was clean and modern but pricey, busy and super cold coming up and down the stairs to the loft pool. Better off in Pest or Baden Baden.

Love this place, set over a few levels there are various steam and sauna rooms, I personally loved the botanical one that had a slight smell of herbs in the steam. There is also two heated mineral spa pools, one on the bottom floor but the jewel in the crown is the rooftop thermal mineral spa pool ...... absolutely amazing. Would be 5 stars but gets very busy

Relaxing and nice experience.. Ice bath and relaxing room was my fav😊. Only downside, you are not allowed phone to click to admire the view from roof top. They should at least have one section just to take pictures from rooftop in the end with no coverage of people around.

It was a nice Friday afternoon experience. The pool area has a window which is nice. However don’t come with the expectation of a real spa experience. The facilities are outdated, it felt like no one really looked after the steam bath. Sauna was wood and stone fired which was lovely. There weren’t enough sunbeds. There is a water fountain that is so loud it fills up the whole room. Treatments were good but massages not hard enough
